UNIT 18 WORKSHEET
Task 1 – Why do teachers need
to evaluate their students’ English?
Through evaluation, not only does the
teacher see how well the student performs, but the student also can see his/her
own progress. Evaluation allows the teacher to monitor the progress and
determine which areas require more/less focus. They can see their students’
strengths and weaknesses and alter their lesson plans to suit the needs of the
students. It also demonstrates how much information the student is retaining or
if there needs to be any adjustments in their teachings. This helps better the
teacher in his/her teaching and improve his/her methodology as well.
Task 2 – List the different types
of testing and evaluation tools that a teacher can use:
There are tutorials, which can take place as a group
or individually. With tutorials, your review the work done, discuss the aims or
any problems, and the students’ performance.
Evaluation by the students can be useful to evaluate
the course by questionnaire/surveys or guided discussions of their opinions.
There a number of tests that a teacher can use.
Placement tests, progress tests, diagnostic tests, practice tests, external
examinations (TOEFL, IELTS, TOEIC), proficiency tests, and achievement tests.
Task 3 – Why may students
wish to study for a formal test of English?
Students may wish to study for a
formal test because they will want to do well on it and tests rely mostly on
rote memory. By testing well, they can study or work in America. People that
wish to work/study in a country where English is the native language may have
to take a proficiency test or external exam in English. Colleges and businesses
will want to see how fluent your English is.
Task 4 – What do you think
are the strengths and weaknesses of the example placement test on pages 4 and 5
of this unit?
The questions are easy to follow and
orderly. The directions were simple and concise, thereby making the entire exam
easy to understand. It covers a versatile of areas of language and the level of
difficulty gradually increases and flows smoothly.
The vocabulary overall was within
level but there were some uncommon words that students may be unfamiliar with,
such as bicentenary. Also, the terminology of the directions from Section 4 may
be confusing for some students (in not less than 50 words). It would be simpler
to just say in more than 50 words. The placement test starts off at a level
that is unsuitable for beginners. The test should begin with beginner level
items that are really simple and become gradually harder and higher level.
Task 5 – What would you
include in a thirty minute progress test for a group of beginners? Give a
detailed outline of the test you would construct, with examples.
